I don't hate the series, but I don't think it's the greatest. Either way, I'm kind of excited for the sixth book to come out. Curious to see what happens--
Rowling seems to be going on a new roll with her books: Kill a character in each one. Who goes next? |

| Well, I'm happy for the author who wrote the Harry Potter series. I never read the books though. Never been interested. Plus my sister hates Harry Potter, but that's not the reason I won't read them. My tastes are quite different. |

Though I'm not a fan of the series myself, Harry Potter got a bunch of kids reading books. So, its excellent if just for that. _________________ “When I am fighting I am keeping my mind empty for any expectations. I am waiting for something unique, completely new.”

I love the series, personally, so you might say I'm slightly biased - but I agree with Zenphobia. Good or not, they're books, and kids are reading them. And kids reading in whatever capacity for whatever reason, is a good thing. _________________ "Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one." - Albert Einstein |

Hey, it's better than having the little bastards staring at a television screen all day, mindlessly watching cartoons and stumbling upon porn on the HBO channel.
Yes...I think reading is a much better option.
Not to mention, in spite of everything, I think Rowling has a very active imagination, and is very innovative in certain respects. She may not be the greatest writer in my opinion, and most certainly not on my list of favorites, but if she can get so many young'uns to read, then she gets a great pat on the back.
It kind of gives me some hope, too: You really can make a living off of writing. Ha! Take that, kin! |

Ok. For the most part, people who suddenly start admitting they hate harry potter are usually people who had secretely read all the Potter books in the past, but just dont want to admit it to prevent themselves looking like someone who reads something that "childish."
Come on, admit it. You know you've read the books you snobs. You just dont want to admit it at the risk of apparently sounding less intelligent on an internet forum. _________________ My Wishlist Its my BIRTHDAY! On August 15! Buy me something from the kindness of your collective hearts. |

I read 'em. They aren't the best books, and I've read a lot of books in my dully lived-life. I think Rowling stole a lot of her ideas from the Earthsea series, and a combination of many other books with similar material...
There are a lot of better series...

There is a saying I heard once: "Bad writers copy. Good writers 'steal'."
No matter how innovative a story is, there will always be certain elements that are similar to other stories already created.
For instance.... Much as I try to be original with my writing, I find that I do incorporate other ideas into my own original ideas as well. You will discover that this is a common thing with a lot of writers everywhere.
Just because you see certain rudiments in a story that reminds you of something else, doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad thing (which I guess is hypocritical in my part, since once upon a time I was trying to hold up an argument that this was evidently a bad thing. In some cases, it isn't).
However, I do agree with you to the core that there are better books out there. Let's just hope that even though kids will read "Harry Potter" books, they will be motivated to read more books in the future. |

Well, another bonus of incorporating ideas from other authors is, you encourage those books to be read if you build up a fanbase around you. If they recognize what was taken from others, they may read those and like them too. What's important is the quality of information. My signature sums up my feelings on that. _________________ "The good writers touch life often. The mediocre ones run a quick hand over her. The bad ones rape her and leave her to the flies."

I know I've read a lot of stuff this same way. For example, I never would have touched Quantum Psychology had it not been for Broken Saints. It has greatly affected my life. My only complaint is that Robert Anton Wilson seems to be the only good author on the subject. I picked up another book on it and got so frustrated with the author's horrible grammar that I stopped reading it. Not to mention it was terrible.
Anyways, I'm off topic. _________________ “When I am fighting I am keeping my mind empty for any expectations. I am waiting for something unique, completely new.”
