I am getting to enjoy neither of those properly, thank you. Sure, leaves die around here, too--but those are just dead leaves. They're not autumn leaves.

The tree in the back yard: half-dead, split in the middle, leaning on two other trees, asserting itself with a loud creak every time the wind blows stronger than a peaceful gust.
A pretty thing blushing at you in the supermarket on a day when you feel old.
Having the strength in the morning to brew a fresh pot of coffee, instead of microwaving yesterday's, sometimes yesterday's yesterday's.
That guy you love to work with who offsets the guy you hate to work with.
My mother's e-mails. English being her second language, her syntax is blunt, bold, brilliant. Writers strive to have the plain-faced style she uses, uncomplicated by over-thinking, free in her basic understanding. If I could hug her from across the Atlantic dividing us! I'm not sure who needs the hug more.
The summertime yells of the kids at the community pool, how it reminds you of the magic you used to feel in the summer when you were a boy, out of school so long by the end of the break you were happy to go back, for now content to scream across a pool to a best friend you just met, chlorine in your nose and eyes, "Cannonball!"

And on the subject of individuals "blushing" at you . . . I have gotten a number of stares in my time, and I'm not sure as to whether one should be flattered by them. They tend to happen when I'm busy being a long-haired male wearing a battered overcoat with buttons sewn on in mismatching thread. And I'm possibly unshaven.
