Well, I've been out of the loop. And now that I'm not, I'm a bit confused and unhappy.

I haven't bother to watch the Lord of the Rings movies. However, no surprise, when the things came out they caused some annoying frustration vis a vis the Eye of Sauron and Broken Saint's Evil Eye. Sure, I could imaging that happening. I mean, just look at the Eye of Sauron:

Granted, you'd think that people would be able to recognize that more than one artist is allowed to use a red eye. C'mon, it's classic! I don't know who drew the above example, but I've seen it basically everywhere there was anything Lord of the Rings-ish (say, cards games or board games or roleplaying games) for easily a decade now.

And then . . .

Today I got on the internet and actually looked up images for the Eye of Sauron.

Hol, eee, cow.

Somehow, I must have never seen a single movie poster with it nor passed any crazed fans wearing it nor anything. Who's stupid idea was this? Everyone knows what the Eye of Sauron is!

Not only that . . . but if you think I'm just making a big deal out of nothing, I have a movie trailer for the Fellowship of the Ring on a CD in front of me right now that uses the correct image. Who's stupid idea was it to change the setup from the correct image?

I am upset, and now I can easily empathize with the frustration you folks got when the clash began. How very rediculous. You couldn't even blame the people who were being confused, could you?

I'm still amazed. Sorry about the mess.

I always saw a resemblance, but I shrugged it off after reading something about some ancient mythology having a being represented by a large red eye.

I can't remember where or what I read, I'll have to dig it up again.

Ditto (except I didn't do any mythology reading).

Well to me I never seen it as an eye in seriousness after it was established it was an eclipse and then the distant shadow of the top of the biocom tower because of the satellites lighting ect.

Well, I should point out that I chose the particular (newer) image above because it was a small file. Other, larger interpretations--which I'm sure are the ones put in the movie--don't have nearly as much of a weird yellow border. Instead, they're really just a circle of red with a vertical eyeslit.

So, go from there: a person visiting a convention who wants to hand-make the Eye of Sauron can try to get all detailed with the flames, or just draw . . . our Evil Eye. So, like I said, you can't blame anyone for being confused over, say, Fallen_Angel's Evil Eye with her Shandala outfit. Though it bothers me so.

. . . Ugh, I'm sick (literally) and tired.

I read about it on the holy Wikipedia, yeah.

C'mon, say it with me...."These people have no lives."

Neither do I.

You, know I always wondered where this "fancy" is located. People say it all the time, "Haha you tickled my fancy".... and I am like sitting there fancy what? Fancy Pants, it seems like a incomplete sentence. So I just stare at them and I am like "Well, you're welcome, would you like another?" And then they just give me the and change the topic.

Hmm.

I'd tell you wear a fancy is, but kids could be reading...

Anyway, back to Rexy. I find it very hard to believe you've seen the iconic eye of "Lord..." for over a decade, since a vast majority of LotR stuff has been out of print until the recent releases spurred by the movies.

Second, there is the fact that the Sauron Eye, the second one, is how it's depicted in the movies - an obvious Broken Saints rip-off (since BS did come first).

Thirdly, there is a simple explanation to the similarity. There's a particular bar in New Zealand that specializes in attracting mid-morning customers; generally those that are either hardcore drinkers, coming off late-shift work schedules, or treating hangovers.
That eye, in stained glass, decorates the wall to the right of the entrance.

Awesome, leave it to the Couch to cut right to the heart of the matter.

However, my sarcasm detector is having a hard time being sure whether this one:

. . . contains any sarcasm. Just in case--I based the "decade" estimate on having first encountered the version of the art I showed you in early high school, with the arrival of a card game/rpg/I forget which exactly. I didn't play. (Perhaps it was actually a fiendish zzyzzygystic plot to make me impose that art on other experiences I had since, ultimately getting me to look net-foolish sometime in the then's future!)

It was merely another wacky synchronicity on this end, as I hadn't seen any LotR art/conceptuals aside from the animated films (at a tender age). You can imagine the gang's shock when we were sitting in Fellowship and were greeted with the flaming symbol of Sauron's lidless gaze. FUCK!

Brooke is swearing? I didn't expect that.

For some reason, I seem to be getting Brooke mixed up with Brian Micheal Bendis. DAMN YOU, ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN! So addictive. I wonder what Brooke thinks of his work? *nudges Brooke*

Anyway, the similarities between the Evil Eye and the Eye of Sauron never bothered me because I generally hate the Lord of the Rings movies. I just find them too long. My ADHD kicks in after an hour, nevermind three. The only movie I've been able to watch in recent memory without wanting to turn away was Stranger Than Fiction, which is quite possibly one of the best movies I've ever seen.
