Sorry, despite the title, this is not a spam advertisement. Instead, it's me writing again:

People speak of cellular phones as though they were instruments of connection. They are just as much instruments of isolation.

If you do not see this in yourself, then at least be willing to see this in others. See the couple walking down the street together, one of them on a cell phone, the other useless. See the latter go along wordlessly, while the former takes the very important "call." They suppress every little gesture, every little word which a moment ago could have been made there to reinforce their relationship. Shared experiences, those little moments of "Hey, look at that" are not only absent, but unwanted: "Hey, not now, I've got a call."

Is the silent one silent out of politeness? Yes, of course. But how does it feel to be silenced not by a stern schoolteacher, but by your friend? Your loved one? How does it feel to know that your walk together doesn't "count," because the "call" counts more?

Cell phones do prevent moments such as this:

I might make an exception if one were to use a cell phone to communicate with the UFO; but I think also that, were one to be in such a situation, many issues of context would differ dramatically.

My cell depresses me so. My friend are all " WOW! Everything is so cool! You gotta move back home!" But I've got a job, gettin' money, & pot is not such a big thing for me anymore. I love my friends but I like where I'm at and the security my job assures. I get so homesick talking to all friends. Holycrap, I forgot I order pizza and here it is...

A human being? How did that happen?

And for that matter, is there an epic tale behind the multi-year silence that went from your sign-up date to your first post? Have you been lurking? Or did you actually want to post back in 2007, but you were abducted by octopi and had to wait until modern day?

Definitely anthropomorphic but I wouldn't go so far as to say human. My posts are the result of alcohol abuse and my silence until now can really only be attributed to acute circumspection. Sorry, no intriguing bardic tale here.

Oh, and my cephalopoid captors wish it to be known that I am being treated with as much decency and respect that a human-like being deserves.
