hmmm, maybe I'll post some of my old stuff, see what happens
| Quote: | Whenever I feel like
I don’t have an answer
Whenever I feel like
There’s no one around
I walk through the hills and
I silently whisper
All that I’m thinking
Everything is a lie
Never do I want to see
What I was again
Please let me cast away
Everything that I once was
I try to believe that
Things will be better
I try to believe that
It will turn up alright
At least I can sleep and
At least I can wander
Every night I turn it away
Never do I want to see
What I was again
Please let me cast away
Everything that I once was
Sometimes it’s hard to see
Just what I’ve done right here
Sometimes it’s hard to see
Just where that I have gone
I see my reflection
And it looks back at me
I wonder when I have
Become who I am |

For me, it's always been easier to revise than it is to create from nothing.
As far as making money... fiction is very difficult because the market is pretty narrow. From what I understand, it's not much different from working up the non-fiction ladder (just a bit more difficult). Start small, short stories and stuff. Get in some small magazines or e-zines, then progressively work your way into bigger and bigger publications. Settle for publishing for free only in the beginning. Once you get paid, always get paid.
Non-fiction is a wider market, and it's a lot easier to establish yourself as a non-fiction writer and then hopping into fiction from there. Capote proved that you can make non-fiction as elegant as fiction if you research well enough. And you definitely can survive as a non-fiction writer. It's tough as hell, but you can do it if you want it enough. Just start small, and work your way into bigger and bigger publications. _________________ “When I am fighting I am keeping my mind empty for any expectations. As someone who writes to pay his bills, I have to have a process that allows me to produce writing on a consistent basis. Inspiration typically fails at this point. |
This is, to a great extent, what I was trying to say in my first post. You can make a concept bigger and bigger by adding more and more to it (inventing muses, inventing creative demons) . . . and then, when you try to do the thing, you find it's too big to handle. I advocated just sitting down and writing, and you came and gave a very educated explanation of how to do so: there's an awful lot of "writer's craft" that can be learned and can make things plenty better.
But in your writing, you seemed to scorn the idea of "being in the mood" in general. I hope that this is merely a byproduct of your emphasis on shooting down "inspiration" as some necessary magical pill, and not that you view writing as being purely mechanical. Surely, it is far better on the person doing the writing if you want to do it, and there is nothing wrong with striving for "the mood" if you're not ignoring writing the rest of the time.

You know what . . . that strikes me as very good advice in a lot of ways, not just in publishing. I may remember that. Thank you.

To me, there is certainly nothing wrong with being in the mood. I just can't rely on it.
I have to wake up every day and write for 8 hours. That's how I pay my bills. Are there times when everything just clicks and I feel really inspired? Sure, but those are just flickers. I have to produce writing every time I sit down to write. If I don't, I'm missing deadlines.
Whenever writers throw around the words inspiration or muse or mood it makes it all sound very mystical. Those words are just synonyms for "luck." The words just came out perfect, but you have no idea why and have no way of recreating it. It's like someone that hits a hole in one when they're golfing but has no concept of form and finesse, so they can never recreate that perfect shot until they get lucky again some far time down the road. _________________ “When I am fighting I am keeping my mind empty for any expectations. eventually I'll post more stuff up. Once I finish deciding what I actually want to post _________________ "They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old.

Ready to drift away
My friend
Time to set sail
We gotta live life
To get through life
Back into the past
Good time we had
And bad times we’ve seen
But they come and they go
Back into the past
Experiences must be made
And never be forgotten
None will be taken away
Back into the past |

| Quote: | I walked a million miles
I don't know where I went
I crossed the path of those
That I once knew
I corssed the path of those
That I had never known
I walked until I stopped
At the edge of time
It shone just out of reach
It took forever to see
Just who it was right there
The known man of dawn
He told me to go home
This place is not for me
But I kept going on
Never stopping for long
I didn't even stop
When I reached the end
It did not matter then
It was my time to go
I never saw home again
Such a long, long time ago |
