So, after discovering that my university's library has the complete collection, I've started reading through the Sandman series (finally).

I can most definitely see the influence it had on Broken Saints.

Man, that reminds me... I need to actually finish The Sandman comics.

Hob Gadling is the best favorite character.

GOOD. DO MORE OF THAT.

There are a lot of good characters. Effective character development is a sign of a good writer, and its presence is common in literature that, say, matters in any way to its readers. I'm glad that Neil Gaiman is a good writer. Also, I have more of his autographs than you do.

I am so enamoured with Jeff Buckley right now. Especially his cover of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah.

Aww, it's okay. I don't have anything signed by Neil Gaiman.
But one time, he tweeted about my friend's sister and her pit bull foster service. That was cool.

Also, Hob is pretty great. I think Death is my favorite character so far, though.

I also question Dream's fashion sense sometimes. That flame cape is a serious faux-pas.

I'm currently in the middle of "Collectors," and somewhere between having a good dark chuckle over about how said collectors call their meeting the "cereal convention" and being totally grossed out at their hobby.

I feel like the storytelling gets better with each issue, as well as the artwork. It's really nice to see the series grow (even though it ended a long time ago).

So far, so good. I'll probably finish the first volume this weekend and move on to the second sometime next week.

In the few minutes remaining before midnight strikes in my present time zone, I would like to note a thing. In the standard date format of my homeland (or one of them), today's date has been 2/10/2012. The numbers are a palindrome.

YAH.

WHOA.

Guys. Tobias Tinker just showed up on my Pandora.
(The song is "Tiga," from Broken Saints vol. 4, if anyone's curious.)

I'm guessing you must be reading "Absolute" Sandman, because "Collectors" is not in the first volume in the original printings. Since I have yet to read the "Absolute" version, I don't know much about the changes, but I'll give you the advice I've given to other people starting for the first time (e.g., Zephie many years ago).

Has anyone said anything to you about the introductions? If the introductions (you know, those text things by some other writer at the beginning) are anything like they were in the original printings, you won't want to read them until after you've read the attached comics. This is because not only do the intros spoil the comics, but they do so poorly.

It only gets worse and worse as you go through the series, and you'll see what I mean shortly, assuming the things are there for your perusal at all. It gets so bad that, on one of the later books, Neil Gaiman himself did a brief foreword thing that said "So-and-so has written an introduction for this book. You will find it at the end of this book." To this date, I have not finished reading that book's "intro." It is boring and terrible.

So there's my advice. Let me know if it's applicable.

Well, if you've read the intro which had been in the first volume in the original printings, you know that you've passed an important milestone. As was mentioned then, "The Sound of Her Wings" was where Neil Gaiman found out what story he was telling. It's a stunning transition point, and, in fact, a lot of readers debate over where one "should" start reading these books, given the heavy content evolution. I say I'm not an idiot, so I start at the beginning, but I can see multiple waves in how the story develops. Mostly the waves are in ascension.

--Rexfelum

P.S.: See, this is what happens when you bring up storytelling in my earshot.

Yes, I am reading the first of the "Absolute" Sandman books. It's quite nifty, having half the series all in one place. I might be missing out on minor differences, but overall I'm still enjoying the story very much.

I haven't seen any of those introductions of which you speak, which is fortunate, since I never was warned about them. Apparently, somewhere along the way of compiling the Absolute series, someone must have decided that spoiling the audience was a bad idea.
