http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/4670370.stm

From my perspective as an American Muslim, I have a couple of things to address to my European brothers about the Danish cartoons depicting Prophet Muhammed(pbuh).

Why should Denmark be sanctioned by other nations for what an privately-owned paper published?

For all the issues you could be directing your anger toward, why this? If only I saw this much indignation over the 500 muslims detained in Guantanamo Bay.

It is not forbidden to non-muslims to portray the prophet in images. The Prophet said "Let there be no compulsion in religion(Qu, 2:256)". Non-muslims should never be forcefully compelled to see things our way.

This summer, Fadi Abdullatif, spokesman for a Danish chapter of Hizb-ut-Tahrir, claimed that his threats against Danish politicians and Jews were protected speech. Why can't MJ-P be allowed their protected speech?

If you really believe that Islam is compatible with democracy, who among European Muslims are willing to use democratic means to their ends. My brothers in a small college town of Houghton, MI managed to get halal foods shipped for sale at local food stores. They didn't do this by burning flags and threatening the proprieters , but by asking(most important) and rallying support among influential townspeople.

Wouldn't it be a good idea to boycott the newspaper, better yet, use that money that would have gone to MJ-P to support Danes who support PFLP(if that's your thing)?

Ms. Trevino of the F.D.A. said Levitra, an impotence drug that is newer than canada viagra and Cialis, had not been linked with any such cases. The drug is made by Bayer A.G. and GlaxoSmithKline P.L.C. and marketed by the Schering-Plough Corporation.

The news about Viagra rattled investors today and Pfizer's shares fell 55 cents, or 1.9 percent, to close at $28.35 on the New York Stock Exchange.

This is starting to get out of control. Muslim stores in Toronto are starting to ban Danish goods now.

Can't we all just get along?

I also find it interesting that a Jordanian newspaper editor who was fired by the paper for reprinting the cartoons (Mr. Momani, I believe) has now been arrested, and Syrians have set the Danish and Norwegian embassies in their country on fire. They're only hurting the Muslim image more with this reaction. As Shai said, why don't they just boycott the paper? I think Mr. Momani had a good point when he questioned which hurts the Muslim image more, some inflammatory cartoons in a Danish paper, or suicide bombers and hostage takers?

I got my info at www.bbc.com, just in case you want to check it out for yourself.

Seems to be the reaction is definitely overkill, but not altogether surprising, and I don't mean this in a stereotypical way. It's not surprising because it's an attack on their religious prophet. If a, let's say, Chinese newspaper printed a series of cartoons showing Jesus as a big, fat burger-eating arrogant bastard, don't tell me Americans would simply boycott the paper and not hold any grudge against the Chinese government.

It was a stupid, tasteless thing to do in the first place, and this isn't something that will go away in a week. Ughh, humans are so dumb sometimes.

Or, "Humans have reason because we were the only species too stupid to survive based on instinct."

While I don't disagree with you, I will say that the reaction won't be as big as the Muslim's. There have been tons of books, movies, articles that have elicit some sort of boycott in North America, and none have come close to the response that the Danish cartoons has

I know that crazy-ass fundamentalists only make up a small percentage of religious people but this is why I don't like religion. Because it gives people one more excuse to be crazy, unreasonable, violent assholes. Seriously, we have enough problems as a species without creating one more dividing line between ourselves. Life is already like walking through a mine field and throwing religion into the picture is like strapping on snow shoes and playing hopscotch on the afformentioned minefield. I don't know if that's a very good analogy but I think you get the picture.

The only problem is that people need some sort of guidance, a high power, in order to validate their lives, or to give it some sort of direction. In that way, religion can be helpful, there are tons of people, who for lack of a better word, were evil; selling drugs, killing people, or just living a very gluttonus life. They then found religion, and turned better for it, they cleaned up their act, and started to become better people, helping the community, trying to repair the damage they've done.

Religion, and it was my high school religion teacher that told me this, was first created to explain the unknown. Back during the first days of man, they hid in caves at night, fearing the darkness, and only venturing out when dawn came. Then one person really had to use the washroom, so he ventured outside, and as he was doing his business, he felt something on his shoulder. He turned to look but saw nothing, he ran back into the cave to tell everyone this, and then one person said, "that happened to me to!" They start to question what that thing at the shoulder was, and because they cannot come up with a good answer, they create one, God.

This is in itself similar to something I've read from Douglas Adams.
Man first looks at the world around him. He sees grass, this is soft, I can sleep on it. He sees an animal, this is good, I can eat it, make tools from the bones, use the skin as clothing. There is a river near by that I can drink from. He then gets in a very dangerous position, he thinks "why is all this here? This seems like it was created just for me, I fit in so well" Dangerous because he thinks of a higher power as the only solution.

Disney has thought this so silly that they will create a cartoon movie based on this controversial ordeal. It is expected just in time for Ramadon '08.
