Strange Day Haiku

Blackhole sun

  • BLACK HOLE SUN, WON’T YOU

    COME…AND WASH AWAY THE RAIN?

BLACK HOLE SUN – PLEASE COME.

It was between these lyrics and these ones – the Soundgarden just haiku’ed better. Oh, and this shot was snapped on one of these – having it in my hand was like self-worship without the sticky mess and subsequent shame. Talk about having one’s cake….

Speaking tangentally of tech, more Revolution news – as promised and requested – by week’s end. Oh, and we just got word of some pretty major Canuck new media nods here. Stay tuned, baboons…lots of shrieking in the jungle this week ;)

First I want to say my first language is Spanish, and though I know a lot of English I don’t know this: syllables.

      BLACK (1) HOLE (2) SUN(1), WON’T(1) YOU(2) Total = 7

      COME (2) …AND (1) WASH (1) AWAY (3) THE (1) RAIN (2)? Total = 10

      BLACK (1) HOLE (2) SUN(1) – PLEASE (3) COME (2). Total = 9.

Aren’t haikus supposed to have 5 syllables in first line, 7 in second and 5 in the last? Well, I suppose syllables are different in English, right?

I also want to compose haikus, here is the one I like most:
El Mayo caza (The Mayo (a species of birds that lives around my house) hunts)
En la tarde de Abril. (In the evening of April)
      Caza insectos (Hunts insects/bugs).

And I’ll be cheking the site for that news about Revolution.
      Thank you very much.

Nicanorzan I think you are confusing syllables with vowels (a,e,i,o,u)

    6. vinsin says:

      ???
my first time here also. i have NEVER heard of this site untill Matt’s mailbag at ign. looks like an awsome site, watching old stuff now…

    7. N4ever says:

also my first time here, came because matt at ign had a link to this site. I must say very interesting sight.

    8. Saggio says:

Look what you’ve done, Brooke. You’ve got all the little kiddies from IGN scrambling around here like you were posting a review for Shock and Burnie. At any rate, it’s good to see the influx of fresh souls.

NicanorZan, I also believe you are mistaking syllables for vowels. A syllable is the number of stresses/accents that you give a word.

      Porque (2)
      Because (2)

      Cómo (2)
      How (1)

      El (1)
      The (1)

See what I mean, now? In many dictionaries you will find a breakdown of the word according to syllable, right next to the word itself. For example, when I look up the word “because” at dictionary.com, I find it broken down thus: be·cause (b-kôz, -kz).

The first is the word according to syllable, the second is the word pronunciation. You’ll get the hang of it. And, doesn’t tarde mean afternoon? Estudio español en mi escuela. ¿De dónde es?

yo pretty cool site. first time here, saw the link at ign. if you guys are on the inside with nintendo then i’ll be a regular here.

      cya guys around!

I know this is way too late but I wanted to reply. I told you my first language is Spanish and I didn’t understand the syllables in English; in Spanish the syllables are that way, every vowel is a syllable, but English is a language that you don’t know what rules it obeys, don’t worry I’ll learn, but until that, well.
Yeah I know tarde is afternoon, I just wanted to translate it that way, and you may say “this guy can accept his error”, well think what you want cause I don’t care, and I can’t tell you exactly where I am, but I’m in South America.
Thank you very much and sorry for the so late reply.

Oh a new Palm! I’m so jealous. LOL I wish I could buy one of those but it’s something I don’t really need. I rather give my money to starving artists who are really in debt. :P

Yeah, Soundgarden lends itself more to Haiku. Now, if you think about it, Sting is using *trumpets sound* rhyming couplets for King of Pain (For a former English teacher, I would have expected him to stretch a bit more and went for quatraines, at least but he graduated to that after he left the Police). In fact, alot of artists use this pattern when writing songs, most notably, Depeche Mode. Now, if you really want to challenge yourself, try reading early Tori Amos lyrics. ;)

I think the best song though if you can understand what he’s actually saying is Bob Dylan’s “Subterranean Homesick Blues”. Almost makes you think of it being an early rap. :D Although I still prefer Air Farce’s comedic parody for that song as a jingle for TD Bank year ago.
