Putting heads together

Wednesday, August 31st, 2005

Kim and I were down at the local open mic night at the waterfront coffee haunt, chatting with mutual pal Kelsey about the possibility of arranging a short-notice benefit for the hurricane victims in New Orleans. We’ll keep you all posted on progress, but the hope is to throw a cajun-style jazz/blues bash (complete with a bit of celeb pull, gaudy decorations, and miles of ‘earnable’ beads) to get those neighbourhood pockets to open wide for the sadness to the South. With school about to start, the timing’s ripe to galvanize communities on the micro level and put our hearts first!

Got any personal stories to share from the Big Easy? Aid agencies to recommend? Special charity events to evangelize? Post ’em here, kids…the space is always here for everyone.

And Chavez just won’t lie down…

    Monday, August 29th, 2005

CARACAS, Venezuela (Reuters) – Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez said on Monday his government plans to sell as much as 66,000 barrels per day of heating fuel from its U.S. Citgo refinery to poor communities in the United States.

The offer, made after populist Chavez held talks with U.S. civil rights activist Rev. Jesse Jackson, would represent 10 percent of the 660,000 bpd of refined products processed by Citgo. The deals would cut consumer costs by direct sales.

Venezuela’s Energy Minister Rafael Ramirez said officials were still working on the details on how the oil would be sold from Citgo, a unit of the state oil firm PDVSA.

“We are going to direct as much as 10 percent of the production, that means 66,000 barrels, without intermediaries, to poor communities, hospitals, religious communities, schools,” Chavez told reporters at a press conference.

The world’s No. 5 oil exporter, oil cartel OPEC member Venezuela is a key supplier to the United States, providing about 15 percent of all U.S. energy imports.

But relations between Caracas and Washington have become strained since left-winger Chavez was elected in 1998 promising social reforms.

Chavez, a former army officer who survived a coup in 2002, frequently accuses the U.S. of backing efforts to kill him or topple his government. U.S. officials dismiss those charges but say Chavez has become a threat to regional stability.

(all this, after the US-endorsed/backed coup attempt AND the asinine call for assasination from Pat Robertson. Keep kickin’ it real, Hugo.)

    Scope this shit!

With FOX’s recent half-billion dollar purchase of MYSPACE.com, it seemed timely to mention that BS already has a nice little presence on this ginormous hub that’s usually reserved for indy bands, low-rate exhibitionism, and seedy cyber hookups. Yup…thanks to our darling forum favorite Fallen Angel (who you can witness in gorgeous Shandala attire at the BS Myspace shrine), the word continues to be spread. And, with a little gentle nudging and patient persistence, she even coaxed me to join and add some nominal gravity to the ever-expanding friendship network therein.

So…uhh…does anybody wanna be our friend? Smooches are free! 🙂

  • This is probably one of the more surreal moments of my young adult life – sitting at the pre-fabbed concrete and glass maw of Rodeo Drive on the patio of the Beverly Wilshire Hotel (can you hear Roy Orbison twitching in his grave…? I thought you could). Currently quaffing an extremely dry martini with oversized mutant olives (when in Rome), waiting for a rendezvous with an old highschool chum (a MAD crush from ’88 – yup, I just buried myself with chronology), and am only now attempting to process all the ‘plastic’ of the past couple of days (miniature pets, eye-job bandages, and multiple Rock sightings).

Still, I needed to get away and focus on that nebulous thing called ‘the future’ for a few days…and this shiny nub of simulation and simulacra certainly lent a much needed assist. Couldn’t have done it without a wicked seat sale and the surprising hospitality of Mr Diamond Dave Kaye and his amazing bonus bed o’ bliss. Of course, ‘work’ still finds a way to insinuate itself into most waking moments…but then, considering the geography, there are worse synchronocities to be had 🙂

  • Not much to say about the travesty of this weekend’s show – technical problems, scheduling issues, illness and personal tragedy – you freakin’ NAME it.

The only saving graces in my book were the incredible professionalism of our makeshift crew, the loving comraderie of the lads, and the sheer talent of our three diverse guest acts: PLANTLIFE (led by Mr David Morris – pictured here), THE APPROACH, and the shamefully short-changed THE IMPERIAL PLAYGROUND.

Thanks to them, the majority of party-goers went home (police-encouraged, btw) satisfied – but I think it’s safe to say that the BS parties need to have a real PURPOSE if they’re ever to happen again…otherwise? Well, then it’s just a load of well-lit wanking that folks could easily (and happily) live without.

And that, dear friends, is coming straight from the biggest stroker of the bunch.

(the BS crew are featured guests at this year’s local con, but we had to bow in awe at the thunderous ovation Kirby received at opening ceremonies this morning – hell, I was just lucky to be sitting nearby in close proximity to such staggering animal musk :P)

  • (Here’s a quickie reprint from the latest mailer – wish me luck flying the Yankee skies, and extra special thanks to Fallen Angel for making it all possible…we love you, Sooooo! 😉 )

Yup…you read right. For all those Nintendo-heads swarming our little sanctuary around the time of E3 – resulting in the untimely desecration of our original Fan Forum – it’s time to strike back! I’m heading down to G4’s LA hq today to appear live on their pop-cult program ‘Attack of the Show’, where – aside from some shameless DVD pimping and general saintly soapboxing – some game-related news might finally slip the seals.

Millions of folks in the US are dialed in to G4 (seriously…some don’t even KNOW they are!), so click the linkie above for scheduling and repeats in your area, and make sure you’ve got a tape in the old-fangled video cassette recorder doohickey…you know, the dusty black thing you stack books on…beside the X-Box…and behind the TiVo. Daggumit!
